Title/Format/Rating/Source: Hollywood Palladium - CD - D - Audience

Date/Location/Venue: 06/13/69 - Los Angeles, CA - Hollywood Palladium

Year & Country Issued/Label: 2005 - Japan - Main Stream

Comments: Below average audience recording with all the usuals: varying tape speed, highs cutting in and out and fair sound quality.

Track Listing: Heaven And Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me, Feel Me, Substitute, Summertime Blues, Shaking All Over, Magic Bus

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Flying To NY To Go To Court - CD - B- - Audience

Date/Location/Venue: 06/19/69 - San Francisco, CA - Fillmore West

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1996 - Japan - Firepower

Comments: I'm not particularly fond of audience recordings. This one's about average...

Track Listing: Heaven And Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, Overture, It's A Boy,1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight To The Blind, Christmas, Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Go To The Mirror, Smash The Mirror, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Boris The Spider, Summertime Blues, Shaking All Over, Magic Bus

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Starring The Who - LP - D- - Audience

Date/Location/Venue: 08/17/69 - Bethel, NY - Woodstock

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1975 - Unknown - Unknown

Comments: Bad... I had this one and "Gather Your Wits" (Dallas '69) and couldn't decide which one was worse, so I got rid of both of them. Somehow, this one seemed to make its way back! Unless you like the cover, don't even bother. There's much better stuff out there.

Track Listing: Heaven & Hell, I Can't Explain, It's A Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, The Hawker, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Abbie Hoffman Incident, Do You Think It's Alright?, Fiddle About, There's A Doctor, Go To The Mirror, Smash The Mirror, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Going To Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation, Naked Eye

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Starring The Who - CD - B+ - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 08/17/69 - Bethel, NY - Woodstock

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1993 - Unknown - Silver Rarities

Comments: Very good, mono soundboard (no stereo soundboards from Woodstock have been released to date). The speed is about 2% too fast, but the sound is very clean.

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Live In Woodstock 1969 - CD - B - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 08/17/69 - Bethel, NY - Woodstock

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1993 - Unknown - Hallmark

Comments: Unfortunately, this CD suffers the high frequencies cutting in and out. Apparently, whoever created this CD had a bad tape deck. "Starring The Who" (CD) or "The Violent Side" are better.

Track Listing: Heaven & Hell, I Can't Explain, It's A Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, The Hawker, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright?, Fiddle About, There's A Doctor, Go To The Mirror, Smash The Mirror, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Going To Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation

Title/Format/Rating/Source: The Violent Side - CD - B+ - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue:  08/17/69 - Bethel, NY - Woodstock, 04/26/71 - London, UK - Young Vic Theatre

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1995 - Japan - CF

Comments: I found this to be the best sounding of the Woodstock '69 boots. My only complaint is that they didn't fit all of the Woodstock performance on one CD. The Young Vic material actually sounds better on other boots.

Track Listing: Woodstock '69: Heaven & Hell, I Can't Explain, It's A Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, The Hawker, Christmas, The Acid Queen, Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright?, Fiddle About, There's A Doctor, Go To The Mirror, Smash The Mirror, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Going To Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation
Young Vic '71: Getting In Tune, Bargain, Pinball Wizard, See Me, Feel Me, Baby Don't Do It

Title/Format/Rating/Source: The First Complete Rock Opera - LP - B+ - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 09/29/69 - Amsterdam, NL - Concertgebouw

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1990 - Belgium - Unknown

Comments: Great cover! Good soundboard recording, but the CD versions sound better. I'm not a big fan of this particular concert, as all the copies I've heard to date seem to suffer from the same bad mix - whereas Pete's guitar is very high in the mix and Keith's drums are relatively low, giving you the impression of a "watered down" performance (vs. just a bad mix).

Track Listing: Heaven And Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, Substitute, Happy Jack, I'm A Boy, Overture, It's A Boy, You Didn't Hear It (1921), Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight To The Blind, Christmas, Cousin Kevin, The Acid Queen, Underture, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Pinball Wizard, There's A Doctor I've Found, Go To The Mirror Boy, Tommy Can You Hear Me, Smash The Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Welcome, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Live In Amsterdam - CD - B+ - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 09/29/69 - Amsterdam, NL - Concertgebouw

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1989 - Italy - Swingin' Pig

Comments: Better sound than the vinyl versions, but same bad mix.

Track Listing: Heaven And Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues, Substitute, Happy Jack, I'm A Boy, Overture, It's A Boy, You Didn't Hear It (1921), Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight To The Blind, Christmas, Cousin Kevin, The Acid Queen, Underture, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Pinball Wizard, There's A Doctor I've Found, Go To The Mirror Boy, Tommy Can You Hear Me, Smash The Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Welcome, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over

itle/Format/Rating/Source: The Live Tommy - CD - B+ - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 09/29/69 - Amsterdam, NL - Concertgebouw

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1994 - Australia - Grapefruit

Comments: See comments under "Live In Amsterdam" <above> - modified track listing <below>.

Track Listing: Substitute, Happy Jack, I'm A Boy, I Can't Explain, Overture, It's A Boy, You Didn't Hear It (1921), Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight To The Blind, Christmas, Cousin Kevin, The Acid Queen, Underture, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Pinball Wizard, There's A Doctor I've Found, Go To The Mirror Boy, Tommy Can You Hear Me, Smash The Mirror, Sensation, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Welcome, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, See Me, Feel Me, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, Boris The Spider, My Generation

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Pure Rock Theatre - CD - A- - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 10/15/69 - Ottawa, Canada, 12/14/70, Unknown 1969/70, Leeds, UK - University Refectory

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1995 - Unknown - Hiwatt

Comments: An interesting alternative to "Live At Leeds" in terms of time period and feel. Most of the sound quality on this boot is excellent, with an occasional dropout, thin sounding track, or downright "wobbly" ("A Quick One While He's Away). However, on balance, this is one of the better ones to have.

Track Listing: Ottawa: Heaven & Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues
Leeds: Substitute, Happy Jack, I'm A Boy
Various Source/Unknown: A Quick One While He's Away, Overture, It's A Boy, 1921 Sparks, Underture, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, See Me, Feel Me, Listening To You, Summertime Blues, Shaking All Over

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Roulette Rock - CD - A- - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 10/15/69 - Ottawa, Canada, 12/14/70, Unknown 1969/70, Leeds, UK - University Refectory

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1996 - Unknown - Eclectic

Comments: Seems to be a dub copy of "Pure Rock Theatre" (above - see those comments for more details). I find this "dub" to be a little brighter in sound, giving the sound quality edge to "Pure Rock Theatre" (if you had to make a choice). Great cover!

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Electric Factory 1969 - CD - A- - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 10/19/69 - Philadelphia, PA - Electric Factory

Year & Country Issued/Label: 2002 - USA - Night Hawk

Comments:  Excellent soundboard, great performance. Unfortunately, "Heaven And Hell" starts less than 2 minutes before the end. (The speed needs to be corrected by ~ +3% and the left and right channels are reversed.)

Track Listing: Heaven And Hell, I Can't Explain, Overture, It's A Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, The Acid Queen, Summertime Blues, My Generation

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Accept No Substitute - CD - A- - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 10/22/69 - New York, NY - Fillmore East

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1992 - Italy - Big M

Comments: While the CD cover says, "Live In San Francisco 1969", apparently, this show is actually at the Fillmore East (vs. The Fillmore West). While not a complete show, the sound quality on this CD is excellent, but only AFTER you "fix" it. (The speed needs to be corrected by ~ +5% and the left and right channels are reversed.)

Track Listing: Introduction, Heaven And Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Young Man Blues, Overture, It's A Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey/Sparks, Eyesight To The Blind/Miracle Cure, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Sparks On The Bay - CD - A- - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 10/22/69 - New York, NY - Fillmore East

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1994 - Italy - Oil Well

Comments: This is a pirated copy of "Accept No Substitute" (above). Apparently the title was taken from the mistaken San Francisco location listed on the original CD. This copy sounds slightly thinner than "Accept No Substitute".

Title/Format/Rating/Source: The Who Live Unauthorized - CD - A- - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 10/22/69 - New York, NY - Fillmore East

Year & Country Issued/Label: Unknown - Australia - AMCOS

Comments: Another pirated copy of "Accept No Substitute" (above). This one rearranges the track list.

Track Listing:  Summertime Blues, I Can't Explain, Heaven And Hell, Fortune Teller, Young Man Blues, Overture, It's A Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey/Sparks, Eyesight To The Blind/Miracle Cure, Shakin' All Over

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Live Vol. 1 - CD - B+ - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 11/02/69 - Washington, DC - McDonough Gymnasium, Georgetown University, 02/14/70 - Leeds, UK - Leeds University Refectory, Live Vocal BBC tracks, other live tracks (Unknown source)

Year & Country Issued/Label: Unknown - Australia - Joker Productions

Comments: Tracks out of performance order, the left and right channels are reversed and the speed is slightly fast. Compare sound quality to "Cops & Robbers" and "Wintertime Trip" (below).

Track Listing: 11/02/69: Overture, It's A Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight To The Blind, Heaven & Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation, See Me, Feel Me
02/14/70: I Can't Explain, Happy Jack, I'm A Boy
Live - Unknown Source: My Generation, See Me, Feel Me
BBC Tracks: The Relay, Long Live Rock

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Cops & Robbers - CD - A- - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 11/02/69 - Washington, DC - McDonough Gymnasium, Georgetown University

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1999 - USA - Massive Attack

Comments: A nice CD, but unfortunately not a complete show. Besides having the tracks out of performance order, the left and right channels are reversed.

Track Listing: Overture, It's A Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight To The Blind, Heaven & Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation, See Me, Feel Me

Title/Format/Rating/Source: 1969 Wintertime Trip - CD - A- - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 11/02/69 - Washington, DC - McDonough Gymnasium, Georgetown University, 02/15/70 - Hull UK - Hull University - Studio Track

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1999 - EEC - Dandelion

Comments: Another case of "a boot of a boot". However, the cover is worth the price alone!

Track Listing: Georgetown '69: Overture, It's A Boy, 1921, Amazing Journey, Sparks, Eyesight To The Blind, Heaven & Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation, See Me, Feel Me
Hull '70: Heaven & Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues
Studio Track: I Believe My Own Eyes (Pete Townshend demo from the Broadway "Tommy" book)

Title/Format/Rating/Source: Eternal Mods - CD - B- - Audience & Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 12/04/69 - London, UK - Bristol Hippodrome, 02/15/70 - Hull, UK - Hull University

Year & Country Issued/Label: 1999 - Japan - Hiwatt

Comments: A combination of "average" sounding audience tracks (Bristol Hippodrome) and decent sounding soundboard tracks (Hull '70). Nice artwork, but it makes you wonder how/why people put some of these "packages" together...

Track Listing: Hull '70: Heaven And Hell, I Can't Explain, Fortune Teller, Tattoo, Young Man Blues
Bristol Hippodrome '69: Pinball Wizard, Do You Think It's Alright, Fiddle About, Tommy Can You Hear Me?, There's A Doctor, Go To The Mirror, Smash The Mirror, Miracle Cure, Sally Simpson, I'm Free, Tommy's Holiday Camp, We're Not Gonna Take It, Summertime Blues, Shakin' All Over, My Generation
