The Who - The Kids Are Alright

A must have for all Who fans - the "quintessential" Who film - capturing the spirit of the individual members of the band, as well as some of their greatest, filmed stage performances.

Unfortunately, for one reason or another, the film never quite translated to video properly. The one (and only) true-to-film version was the RCA CED (vinyl video disc), which was never popular and quickly disappeared as a video format. The video tape versions (VHS & Beta) were sped-up and poorly edited. The laser disc suffered from similar problems and distorted sound. As important as this film is to all Who fans - for some reason, nobody could "get it right" - until now...

On September 30, 2003, the newly restored, Dolby 5.1 (and DTS) was released. Finally, done properly. Wow! How refreshing. Great picture quality, great sound. The Who in all its glory in one nice DVD package.

I've read several reviews which were critical of several aspects of the restoration - i.e. "...audio sometimes off-sync with the video...", "...the '...you bet yah' being edited out of 'Won't Get Fooled Again'...", etc. Yes, there are some imperfections (my complaints are the 2 black spots on the screen during "A Quick One While He's Away" and the mono version of "Cobwebs & Strange" - a true stereo mix was available during the production of this DVD, the mastering is a bit "loud" on several of the tracks, etc.). However, overall - this is a great release and a must have. Don't think about it, just buy it...

Note: There are several versions of this DVD - i.e. the "Deluxe Edition" (single DVD) and the "Special Edition" (double DVD with bonus features). The bonus features include interviews, the "making of" (restoration) and a 5.1 mix of the studio "Who Are You" (neat mix!).
