Oakland 1982 2nd Night

The Who - Oakland 1982 2nd Night - CD

Format/Rating/Source: CD - A - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 09/21/82 - Landover, MD - Capital Centre (Sound checks and rehearsals), 10/25/82 - Oakland Coliseum - Oakland, CA (Concert)

Year & Country Issued/Label: 2013 - Japan - Maximum R&B

Comments: Excellent Soundboard recording(s). This is a REALLY good CD... like the other, recently released CD's from the 1982 tour - an excellent soundboard with a nice, wide stereo mix.

I felt that the Portland show had some issues with Roger's vocals and a bit of a lack of energy - this show makes up for it! Roger is pretty much "on" for most of the show, having a bit of hoarseness for "Cry If You Want" (now that we know it was just written with "too many words") and "Who Are You" that followed. However, he recovers nicely by the time they get into "Pinball Wizard" and Kenney Jones does a surprisingly good job on it! (Was the Keith sized drum kit too big for him???)

Unfortunately, the only thing wrong with this CD, is that it's *not* the full concert. It starts off with "My Generation" (towards the end of the song) and finishes with "Love Reign O'er Me", leaving off: Long Live Rock, Won't Get Fooled Again, Athena, Young Man Blues, Twist And Shout, Naked Eye, Summertime Blues (which they performed that night, but are not included on this CD).

However, what *is* included are the rehearsals/sound checks from The Capital Center, Landover, MD (9/21/82) which are fantastic! In some ways these are like "live studio recordings" - very cool and just great to listen to.   My favorites from the Oakland, CA show are: Eminence Front, It's Hard, Tattoo, A Man Is A Man (great harmonies), Pinball Wizard, Substitute   My favorites from the MD rehearsals are: Eminence Front (all versions), It's Hard, Cooks County, Dangerous, Cry If You Want

Track Listing:

Capital Center: Sound Check #1, Eminence Front #1, Eminence Front #2, Eminence Front #3, Eminence Front #4, Sound Check #2, It's Hard #1, Sound Check #3, It's Hard #2, It's Hard #3, Sound Check #4, Cooks County, Sound Check #5, Dangerous, Sound Check #6, Cry If You Want, Sound Check #7, Won't Get Fooled Again

Oakland Coliseum: My Generation, I Can't Explain, Dangerous, Sister Disco, The Quiet One, It's Hard, Eminence Front, Behind Blue Eyes, Baba O'Riley, Tattoo, Drowned, A Man Is A Man, Cry If You Want, Who Are You, Pinball Wizard, See Me, Feel Me, Substitute, 5:15, Love Reign O'er Me

Format/Rating/Source: CD - A- - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 10/10/82 - East Rutherford, NJ - Brendan Byrne Arena

Year & Country Issued/Label: 2013 - Japan - Maximum R&B

Comments: Excellent Soundboard recording

Unfortunately, the 1982 tour has been somewhat "misrepresented" in the Who "history books". Billed as the "final tour", supported by Schlitz Beer and promoting their new album, "It's Hard" - this was a big stadium, still the "loudest-band-on-the-planet" tour... However, because of "Who's Last" and "Who Rocks America" (the album and the video from 1982) - The 1982 tour never got its "fair representation". "Who's Last" was a bastardization of
the Cleveland show (for whatever reason poor performances combined with a record company "micro-managed" mix) and "Who Rocks America" was the video of their final night, December 17 in Toronto - where the band is obviously tired and Roger's voice was shot. So, for those folks who actually didn't see them in 1982 (or did - but don't remember how great they actually were), these two "artifacts" are all you have to go by and therefore the "misrepresentation" of the tour...

The sound quality on this boot is outstanding and could pass for a "professionally released" CD. Perhaps it could have been mixed a bit better (Roger's vocals tend to go from "perfect" in the mix, to sometimes a bit low in the mix) and the drums could have been mixed a bit differently - but so be it... Overall, it's nice, wide stereo - you can hear all the instruments, vocals, etc. clearly and when you turn it up, it sounds like you are "at the concert".   The performances are great too! Not quite as "polished" as an "an officially released" CD, but I happen to like that - the band is more relaxed. Roger, Pete & John are all playing as they should - just great. Unfortunately, Kenney Jones doesn't stand up that well... I was hoping that he just had some "lapses" where he needed to "catch a break", but that's not the case at all. For the most part, you can kind of hear him playing the same patterns over and over and over again and it doesn't work very well. His best drumming comes on "Drowned" - where he actually sounds somewhat like Keith's live performance from 1973 - he gets creative and hits a lot of *different* drums - but, it begins and ends with this song. The very next song, "Athena", he's noticeably absent and the song sounds "unrehearsed" - even though, it actually isn't. Where there needs to be drums to "fill the sound" , he's not there and it makes the performance a bit weak. Another illustration of this is for the drum solo in "Won't Get Fooled Again" - whereas Keith would fill the speakers with a "wall of drums", you get the feeling that someone had to yell "Hey Kenney - start drumming!" This being said, does it make me "not like" the concert? No, but I rolled my eyes too many times - just thinking - what the hell was Kenney thinking here??? Is this me being "picky" and "critical"? Perhaps, I still loved the show, even with the "Kenney moments"...

My favorite highlights of this show are: It's Hard, Eminence Front, Athena and Substitute

Track Listing: My Generation, I Can't Explain, Substitute, Dangerous, Sister Disco, The Quiet One, It's Hard, Eminence Front, Behind Blue Eyes, Baba O'Riley, Drowned, Athena, Cry If You Want, Who Are You, Pinball Wizard, See Me, Feel Me, 5:15, Love Reign O'er Me, Long Live Rock, Substitute, Won't Get Fooled Again, Summertime Blues, Twist And Shout

Format/Rating/Source: CD - A - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 10/21/82 - Portland, Oregon, USA - Memorial Coliseum

Comments: Excellent Quality Soundboard. Roger sums up Portland fairly well, right before they play "Cry If You Want". He goes on to explain that the air conditioning systems in some of the indoor venues have been playing havoc on his voice - that he much prefers the "damp English air" back home. Then, he goes further and complains that "Cry If You Want" has "too many words", which makes it more difficult to sing, etc... Interesting comments. Sometimes you wonder why Roger sounds so perfect on a particular night and then "rough" on a subsequent night.   So, if you haven't guessed by reading the above - Roger's vocals are slightly raw for this Portland show. Kenney's drums actually sound a little better (than NJ - which could be the mix). While I enjoyed listening to this show, the sound quality seemed to be slightly less than that of NJ or Oakland (most people won't notice the difference), but with Roger's vocal change, the band seemed overall less energized than either NJ or Oakland - but they did have some great moments which make this CD very worthwhile...   My favorite songs from this show are:   It's Hard, Eminence Front, I Can See For Miles, A Man Is A Man, Naked Eye

Toronto 1982 1st Night

The Who - Toronto 1982 1st Night - CD

Format/Rating/Source: CD - A - Soundboard

Date/Location/Venue: 12/16/82 - Toronto, Canada - Maple Leaf Gardens

Year & Country Issued/Label: 2013 - Japan - Maximum R&B

Comments: Excellent quality soundboard. This is the last of the (4) Soundboards from 1982 which were recently "unofficially released." Starting with the rehearsal material in September 1982 and ending with the 2nd to last show on the tour, December, 1982 - you get a pretty good flavor of the "progression" of a long tour. Besides featuring new material (from "It's Hard") the other nice aspect of the tour was that the set list varied somewhat from night to night - all great stuff...

What I found most interesting about this particular show is how it compared/contrasted to the infamous December 17 Toronto show. The good news is, its better! While the latter was professionally filmed, broadcast live via pay-per-view, memorialized on video, tracks used as bonus tracks for the "It's Hard" reissue, etc. - what sticks in most Who fans minds - is that "it's a weak show". Furthermore, many Who fans tend to identify that show with the entire 1982 tour - which isn't fair - since unfortunately, it really doesn't represent the tour very well. The band was tired that night and Roger's voice was fairly wiped out after the 2nd or third song... The December 16 show, has more "spark" to it and overall much more enjoyable. Roger's vocals seemed to strain here and there, but overall - he was fine. He seems to have his biggest problems singing "Cry If You Want" (as he put it - "too many words"). Just to see if Roger ever did "get the song right", I played the Orlando show's version (Roger had great vocals for this show and the band was especially pumped up after relaxing in the Florida sun for 3 days) and while he sang it much better than most of the '82 shows I heard, it still wasn't "perfect".

This show's set list drops one of the "It's Hard" songs for "Dr. Jimmy" - which Roger didn't seem to do very well on (which has some irony since he seemed to sing it much better 14 years later for the 1996 "Quadrophenia" tour).

My favorites on this CD are: It's Hard, Eminence Front, Baba O'Riley (does anyone else think the live versions sound BETTER without the piano?), Boris The Spider, Love Ain't For Keeping, Naked Eye & Squeeze Box.

Track Listing: My Generation, I Can't Explain, Dangerous, Sister Disco, The Quiet One, It's Hard, Eminence Front, Behind Blue Eyes, Baba O'Riley, Doctor Jimmy, Boris The Spider, Drowned, Cry If You Want, Who Are You, Pinball Wizard, See Me, Feel Me, Love Ain't For Keepin', 5:15, Love Reign O'er Me, Long Live Rock, Won't Get Fooled Again, Naked Eye, Squeeze Box, Twist And Shout
